چکیده

The purpose of this study is to determine more accurately the marginal stability condition for axisymmetric waves since it is believed that an unstable axisymmetric wave could affect the amplification of spiral waves. An axisymmetric wave with a gradient term of velocity dispersion ( surface density ) is derived. Analysis of this axisymmetric wave with a gradient term for our own galaxy shows that the wave is essentially stable in a medium which is slightly unstable according to the local criterion. Thus, the axisymmetric wave will probably have no effect ( or at best only very slight effects ) on the amplification of spiral waves. Gereralization of the axisymmetric wave to the spiral wave is also discussed. It is conjectured that the spiral wave with a gradient term ( for those galaxies with a large bending structure ) could cause spiral wave emission and amplification. Thesis Supervisor: James W.-K. Spiral stellar density waves and the flattening of abundance gradients in the warm gas component of spiral galaxies

Motivated by recent observations of plateaus and minima in the radial abundance distributions of heavy elements in the Milky Way and some other spiral galaxies, we propose a dynamical mechanism for the formation of such features around corotation. Our numerical simulations show that the non-axisymmetric gravitational field of spiral density waves generates cyclone and anticylone gas flows in th...

Circumnuclear Spiral Arms and Starburst Rings in Magnetized Barred Spiral Galaxies

The Seyfert galaxy NGC 1097 has an extended neutral hydrogen disk, a companion, a prominent bar and a luminous circumnuclear starburst “ring”. Magnetic fields as revealed by nonthermal radiocontinuum emissions correlate well with the optical barred spiral structure on large scales, have a gross enhancement overlapping with the optical/infrared “ring”, and show a trailing swirl around and within...

The Potential-Density Phase Shift Method for Determining the Corotation Radii in Spiral and Barred Galaxies

We have developed a new method for determining the corotation radii of density waves in disk galaxies, which makes use of the calculated radial distribution of an azimuthal phase shift between the potential and density wave patterns. The approach originated from improved theoretical understandings of the relation between the morphology and kinematics of galaxies, and on the dynamical interactio...

A Method for Reconstructing the Full Vector Velocity Field in the Gaseous Disks of Spiral Galaxies

A method is proposed for reconstructing the full vector velocity eld (i.e., the three velocity components) in the gaseous disks of spiral galaxies from observed radial velocities. The method is based on Fourier analysis of the observed velocity eld and interpretation of the resulting Fourier harmonics in the framework of a model accounting for motion in the spiral arms. The model is based on th...

Peculiarities in the stellar velocity distribution of galaxies with a two- armed spiral structure

We expand our pervious numerical study of the properties of the stellar velocity distribution within the disk of a twoarmed spiral galaxy by considering spiral stellar density waves with different global Fourier amplitudes, C2. We confirm our previous conclusion that the ratio σ1 : σ2 of smallest versus largest principal axes of the stellar velocity ellipsoid becomes abnormally small near the o...
